I am writing this letter to ask for your support in changing the current discussion and related policies intended to produce education reform.

Today’s schools are overly focused on standardized test scores, international rankings, grades, and a quantity driven model of education. Teachers throughout the nation are deprived of adequate resources and support while plagued with pressures from federal, state, district, and board mandates that devalue their profession and force them to “teach to a test.”

As a result, students are no longer in classrooms that challenge them to solve complex problems, think creatively, work collaboratively, explore issues with real-world connections, or develop the cognitive, social and emotional skills needed to be healthy, contributing members of society.

Awareness of these issues is rising and the catalyst is the documentary film Race to Nowhere which exposes why students are arriving at college and the workplace unhealthy, unprepared and uninspired.  Over 250,000 people have seen film and have joined communities around the country in a dialogue about transforming our current education system and making the health and well being of our youth a national priority.

You are empowered with the capacity and privilege to make a difference.  I urge you to participate in the dialogue and support education practices and policies that promote quality education over standardized tests and curriculum that helps today’s students become creative, innovative, resourceful and contributing citizens.
